Dear EFA Artist Collective members,We must all be prudent, but not paranoid. But because of the directive from the state we have decided it is prudent to postpone the Art Salon on this Saturday March 15. The good news is that we have already rescheduled it for Sat. July 11, same time, same place. Of course, we will send out a reminder closer to the date. Hopefully we can also celebrate our new freedom from any virus at that time. 

Be safe, stay clean and healthy, and stay in touch.

There is only one thing worse in the world than being talked about. And that is not being talked about. Oscar Wilde.How has Art criticism has changed in the 21 century? We have less published critiques because we have fewer newspapers and print media outlets. But now there is art in the online world.  We deal with LIKES rather than serious write-ups.  Criteria for success for an artist might include getting in a good gallery, sales, and getting published. In your view, does this also include getting reviewed/having a critique of your work?  Or does this not matter to you?  And why not?  You know the old saying:  there is no such thing as bad press! We have a limited number of tickets for this free event hosted and moderated by Portia La Touche at her home and studio in Leucadia. As always we ask you to bring snack and drinks to contribute to the afternoon.Parking  for 4 cars in driveway,  Park on street or  on railroad side of 101 (1 blk away). Encinitas CA— Encinitas Friends of the Arts (EFA) and the City of Encinitas announce the sixth annual Encinitas Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). A time when families gather to honor and remember deceased loved ones, Dia de los Muertos is a significant Latino cultural celebration. The free festival takes place on Saturday, October 26, 2019, 12:00-4:00 P.M. at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024.

Dia de los Muertos will feature a variety of performances and will be emceed by Mano a Mano Foundation Program Director Beatriz Villarreal. The event commences with Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear making welcoming remarks. Performances begin with Danza Azteca Misión San Luis Rey blessing the Ofrenda with ancient traditional dances. This will be followed by Mariachi estrellas de Chula Vista, Ballet Folklorico Rancho Buena Vista High School, Mariachi Del Mar and Danza Alegre. The festival ends with singer Chuy “El Chente” Moreno performing songs from the film, Coco, with dancing by Ballet Folklorico de San Dieguito and the public.

Festival activities include skull face painting, tissue flowers and sugar skull workshops, a Day of the Dead art exhibit by Oak Crest Middle School students, a selfie station with ladies dressed as “Catrinas,” and opportunity drawings for laptop computers and more. Outdoor festivities include a low rider car show by the Callejeros de Encinitas Car Club, artist demonstrations, vendors, and food trucks with options ranging from ice cream to tamales.

A Community Ofrenda—or remembrance altar—will feature a replica of the Surfing Madonna by artist Mark Patterson. “Having the Surfing Madonna in the Ofrenda makes this a uniquely Encinitas event,” said Encinitas Arts Program Administrator Jim Gilliam. All are invited to honor the memory of a loved one or friend by contributing a photograph or non-valuable remembrance to the Ofrenda.
Leading up to Dia de los Muertos, the Encinitas Library will hold two additional free events: Death Café, Tuesday October 22, 3:30 – 5:30 PM; and La Fiesta, Thursday, October 24, 4:00-6:00 PM. “We’re excited to add La Fiesta to this year’s Day of the Dead celebration,” said Branch Librarian Jayne Henn. “The Encinitas Library event willfeature live music by Carlos Velasco and Kevin Moraine and art-making workshops by Luis Murguia while we install the huge Community Ofrenda remembrance altar. It’s going to be a true community collaboration!”

Returning this year, The Death Café, “is a time for people to come together in a relaxed and supportive setting to discuss death, taking the fear out of it, while drinking tea and eating delicious cake,” said Teen Librarian Diana Minuzzi. “The objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.”
A Community Ofrenda will be on view from October 24 through November 4 in the lobby of the Encinitas Library, located at 540 Cornish Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024, along with a Day of the Dead student exhibit or artwork and altars. Encinitas Day of the Dead Festival, It Takes a Village!

The 20 member organizing committee for Encinitas Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is hard at work planning the 6th annual free event, set for Saturday, October 26, from 12-4pm, at the Encinitas Community Center (1140 Oakcrest Park Drive). This year, 4,500 people are expected to attend the celebration of Latino culture with 4 hours of awesome Folklorico and Mariachi performances, art-making workshops, low rider car show, community Ofrenda, artist demos, opportunity drawings (including laptops!), food trucks and more. Pictured are representatives from Encinitas Friends of the Arts, Mano a Mano Foundation, San Dieguito Art Guild, San Dieguito Academy, San Diego County Office of Education, San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth and the City. Encinitas to Celebrate Dia de los Muertos

A Day of the Dead festival in North County San Diego.

Encinitas, CA. Encinitas Friends of the Arts (EFA) and the City of Encinitas announce the 5th annual Encinitas Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  The free festival takes place on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 12:00-4:00 P.M. at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024.  Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear will make welcoming remarks. “This city event raises awareness and an appreciation for this significant Latino cultural celebration,” said Mayor Blakespear.  “Last year’s event drew several thousand people and we anticipate a larger response this year.”

The family-friendly celebration will include continuous performances. Danza Azteca Misión San Luis Rey will bless the Ofrenda with ancient traditional dances, followed by Mariachi Real de San Diego, Ballet Folklorico Rancho Buena Vista High School, Danza Alegre, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego, and Ballet Folklorico de San Dieguito. The festival ends with singer Rafael Renteria performing songs from the film, Coco, with dancing by Ballet Folklorico El Tapatio. Festival activities include skull face painting, tissue flowers and sugar skull workshops, a Day of the Dead art exhibit by Paul Ecke Central School students, and ladies dressed as “Catrinas” for selfie photos.  Outside will be a low rider car show by the Callejeros de Encinitas Car Club, artist demonstrations, vendors and food trucks.

Beatriz Villarreal, Program Director of the Mano a Mano Foundation, will emcee the Day of the Dead festival.  “This is a huge deal for the Latino community,” said Dr. Villarreal.  “Dia de los Muertos provides people with the opportunity to rejoice in the living memories of their loved ones.  It is an important way to celebrate our culture and serves as an educational resource, teaching people around the world about our traditions.”  Día de los Muertos, a celebration of life and remembrance, is traditionally celebrated each year on November 1 and 2.

Artists’ Reception at Off Track Gallery to Feature MiraCosta art students

The public is invited to an artists’ reception at the Off Track Gallery featuring a cash award ceremony to Encinitas Friends of the Arts and also to three promising MiraCosta College students — Rachel Greenstein, Priscilla Rivera, and Jonathan Broberg — on Aug. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Naimeh Tanha will be accepting the award for the Encinitas Friends of the Arts, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, established by local residents and a board of dedicated volunteers to support a vibrant arts community. The mission of Encinitas Friends of the Arts is to partner with the City of Encinitas by fundraising and advocating for the cultural arts in Encinitas and a city-owned Arts Center.

Rachel Greenstein excels in both watercolors and oils. She has won awards for her watercolors in the MiraCosta’s juried student show in the past two years. She also won first place for her oil painting in this year’s show. She is planning to attend UCLA. She exhibited her oils in Duoable Take in the Kruglak Gallery last fall in a special exhibit featuring advanced painters.

Priscilla Rivera has had a talent for portraits and figurative subjects since she was in high school and garnered many awards for her art in The COAL Shows. She has continued to impress her professors with this ability. She won first place this spring for her three-part portrait series titled “Triptych of Andy” in MiraCosta’s annual juried student show. In addition, she won first in the life drawing category.

Jonathan Broberg works in a variety of media and is an outstanding draftsman. His work is whimsical and well executed. He has won numerous awards in MiraCosta’s juried student exhibit in the last two years, including second place wins for watercolor, oil, colored pencil and a pastel. He was a featured artist in the MCC Bluegate Gallery. He is planning to attend the Laguna Beach School of Art and Design.

Refreshments will be served at the reception. All artwork in the gallery will be 10 percent off the entire day from 10 a.m. to closing. This event is free and open to the public.

The Off Track Gallery, 937 South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, is owned and operated by the San Dieguito Art Guild, a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization made up of over 200 talented local artists.

New Public Art Program Launched

The first piece of public art in the City’s new Sculpture Installation Program has been installed at the K Street Parkway, located on the corner of Hwy. 101 and K Street. The artwork is titled, Orpheus, and is a 22’ tall kinetic sculpture made from titanium and stainless steel by renowned Encinitas artist Jeffery Laudenslager. “It is truly a stunning piece as a gateway to our community,” said Commission for the Arts member Deanne Sabeck.

The Sculpture Installation Program calls for a series of sculptures to be installed throughout the city on a temporary basis.  Mr. Laudenslager has loaned the artwork to the City for one year. An official unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 10am and the public is invited to attend.

All project costs for the K Street K Street Parkway, including the installation of a concrete pedestal, was funded by Encinitas Friends of the Arts, its donors, and Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant from the County of San Diego. Generous in-kind support was provided by Qualls Engineering.

2nd Annual Encinitas Flea Market Moves to City Hall 

An artist-led marketplace for art, vintage and treasures.

 

Encinitas, CA. Encinitas Friends of the Arts (EFA) will host the 2nd annual Encinitas Flea Market
on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. in the parking lot of Encinitas City
Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Avenue, Encinitas CA 92024. Original art, clothing, vintage items, jewelry,
collectables, antiques, books, and treasures, will be available for purchase from a mix of
collectors and vendors. Flea market finds can be ideal for early holiday gift giving at excellent
prices. “The flea market will feature treasures from many of our local artists. It is their way to
give back to the community and support the arts,” said EFA president Naimeh Woodward.
“We’re excited to host it this year at City Hall in the heart of downtown.”

Entry fee is $2. Proceeds from the flea market will be utilized for Encinitas Dia de los Muertos
(Day of the Dead), set for Saturday, October 27, which celebrates Latino culture. The flea
market will also feature henna painting for feet and fingers, photo opportunities for Instagram
and Facebook postings, artist-led visual art activities for kids and an ice cream truck. Free
parking will be available at City Hall and the Coaster Station on Vulcan Avenue. Vendors,
interested in participating, may sign up at www.encinitasarts.org

EFA has made significant strides toward its goal of elevating arts and culture. Established in
March 2014 by the City of Encinitas Commission for the Arts, the organization partners with the City of Encinitas to enrich arts and culture in the community through programs and fundraising. EFA programs include the Passport Series, Encinitas Dia de los Muertos Celebration, new public art, and arts education programs for children and youth: Ballet Folklorico de San Dieguito, offering year-round dance instruction, and a Mariachi Band program, which provides instruments, instruction and training. Performers include Bahia-born Lucas Lima on guitar and vocals, Stefanie Schmitz on saxophone and clarinet, Emi Cara on percussion, and Ben Rempel on drums. They are best known for getting a high energy dance party started.

The banners are an homage to major Brazilian artist, Tarsila do Amaral (1886–1973), who is known as the mother of contemporary art in that country with a style called tropical abstraction.

Quill CloudArtist Heather Gibb will display her exotic masks, which are hand-crafted from papier-mâché, and designed for theatre costumes. They are beautiful and functional artwork.
